  • My Story:
  • One man and his Homework mission

Hello!

First of all, let me introduce myself. I'm Naimish Gohil. I'm 28, and I teach full-time at Henry Compton School in Hammersmith and Fulham, West London, UK. I've been teaching for the last 4 years and love it. I was recently promoted to Assistant Head Teacher at my school.

Aside from teaching, I am also tasked with orchestrating the ICT across the school. While I love teaching, I don't like the bureaucracy that comes with it. So, in my spare time, I work on improving my school's admin systems and work with my colleagues to make teachers' lives better.

I have to admit I am a self-confessed computer science geek. My skills have really helped make a difference to the schools I have worked at. Hopefully, now other schools will benefit too, with the help of my latest creation, Show My Homework.

Show My Homework is a simple tool aimed at helping teachers, parents, and students with homework. As you know, homework is an issue for us all. Teachers need to be aware of homework set by other teachers, so students don't get overloaded. Students need to be clear of their homework requirements and deadlines. Also, parents should be involved in the homework process so they have some idea about what their children are expected to do. For those parents who do not speak English well, finding out what their children are doing and what's required can be quite daunting.

Over the past four years, like every other teacher, I have heard many excuses as to why students haven't done their homework; "I lost my work sheet", "I didn't get the message", "I didn't know it was due in today!", "I was at the dentist..." and so on. I've created a way to overcome all of this with Show My Homework.

I originally set up Show My Homework for Henry Compton School and its community. But I soon realised that this tool could benefit other schools as well. During the course of a single school day, teachers have several responsibilities and decisions to make. This makes them hesitant towards investing their time in learning a new technology. That is what motivated me to create something utterly simple and user-friendly for them. Enter Show My Homework: an online tool that is literally what it says it is: it shows students all their homework on one page.

The motto is simple: teachers can post homework questions online. They can also attach worksheets, web links, and video resources. This makes their homework questions engaging and interactive. Students and parents can see these homework questions on their school homework calendar without having to log in.

Showmyhomework_calendar_global Since it's been up and running at Henry Compton School, the students and parents have really taken a shine to it. During the Icelandic volcano disruption which happened earlier in the year, Show My Homework proved to be incredibly valuable. Like many other schools, Henry Compton had a number of staff members stranded overseas. These staff members used Show My Homework effectively during this time. This helped significantly limit the amount of learning disruption caused by their absence.
Since launching Show My Homework, hundreds of teachers from across the UK and even the rest of the world have come on board. They have used different avenues to express how useful and simple they find Show My Homework, be it word-of-mouth, email, or the current sensation, Twitter. At the moment 200+ schools use Show My Homework, not just in the UK but also across the world, in countries like Indonesia, USA, and Australia.

It's still early days, but I want to take this opportunity to thank all the users of Show My Homework for their overwhelming response. It is their encouraging feedback that motivates me to take Show My Homework to new heights! I'm especially excited about its international prospects. I'm also in the process of introducing a number of exciting new features teachers have requested, so do watch this space! It can only get better from here on!
